Wired Auction Information
As of August 4, 2016 we have converted our consignment program to our “Wired Auction™”. This live, real-time, online auction streamlines the process to make it better, easier, and faster, both for buyers and sellers!
The process for sellers is the same as before, except there is the additional option of setting a reserve price for the live auction. Please see “HOW DO I PLACE SOMETHING ON CONSIGNMENT” section of the FAQ.
Clicking the BUY IT NOW button takes the user to the checkout area where the transaction is completed, at which point the auction ends and is no longer available to other buyers. NOTE: The item is sold to the first buyer to complete the shopping cart checkout transaction, so be sure to move quickly!
If the reserve price is not met, the seller has the option to accept or decline the highest bid.
Unless otherwise specified, purchases are subject to the same 5-day inspection period as the former consignment program, during which time they may be returned for any or no reason in the same condition as received for a full refund (less shipping expense).
Good luck to the sellers and buyers!
Additional Used Gear FAQ
What items may I list for sale?
All items that pertain to location recording for film or television are acceptable as long as they still have practical use in the field or fall in the collector category. Items that cannot be listed for a minimum of $100 USD, will not be accepted for consignment sale. All items must be in good working condition. Anything needing repair will be returned to the seller.
The photos of consignment items listed by Trew Audio are produced on-site at the Trew Audio branch that is holding the item. These images, in whole and in part, are the exclusive property of Trew Audio, to be used only for promoting the item for sale by Trew Audio. Transferring or copying any of these images, in original or altered form, for any other purpose, is strictly prohibited.
Any items we deemed in a “Poor” condition, which means; cosmetically rough and some primary features do not work, and/or major parts are missing will not be listed and returned at the owner’s expense. Please do not send items that fit the “Poor” description.
Consignment items listed by Trew Audio will only be shipped to Trew Audio’s buying customer, or returned shipped to the original listing customer.
How do I place something on consignment?
Give us a call and tell us what you have. We will talk with you and determine if the items fit the “what items may I sell criteria” outlined above. If they do, just box up the item or items with appropriate protective packaging. Include in the box a list of all items, including serial numbers and personal address and contact information. Once the item has arrived, it will be visually inspected and the final determination made to complete the listing. This is done to insure the item meets the listing standards of Trew Audio. This must be done on site as accurate condition cannot be determined via phone or email. Trew Audio reserves the right to refuse listings that once inspected on site, are determined not to meet out listing standards. Return will be at the customers expense. All items must be on site at Trew Audio to ensure that the equipment will arrive to the buyer as described. This increases buyer confidence and helps bring top dollar for the equipment.
These items will be catalogued and also photographed when applicable. The items will then be placed on the Consignment page on Trew Audio’s website. If you have specific pricing in mind please include this also. If you do not, Trew Audio will suggest pricing and call to confirm.
What are my fees?
POLICY EFFECTIVE for items listed after March 24, 2002: For items under $500 our listing fee is $10, plus 15% of the final selling price. We waive the listing fee for items priced over $500. All fees are deducted when the sale becomes final. The Seller has the option at the time of sale to leave the proceeds on account at Trew Audio, in which case the base commission rate is reduced to 10%. If equipment is returned to the seller, only the $10 listing fee is due, plus any service/repair costs. Photos are taken by Trew Audio and posted with the listing at Trew Audio’s discretion. Items listed prior to March 25, 2002 remain on the original 10% commission rate structure.
Someone’s trash can indeed be someone else’s treasure, but all consignment items must be clean of dirt, tape residue, etc, and in general “presentable” for sale in order to be listed on Trew Audio’s consignment program. Items that are received that we feel are in need of cleaning will not be listed until cleaned, and a pro-rated cleaning fee of $50 per hour will be deducted from the proceeds of the sale.
Therefore, please inspect all items prior to sending them to Trew Audio, and clean them as needed. For tape residue, we recommend “Goo Gone” for most surfaces, and a mild household spray cleaner for most dirt and grime. For a finishing touch on mixers and recorder (for example), rub in some Pledge furniture spray wax. This will help your items sell quicker, help convince the buyer to keep it, and save you the expense of having us clean your equipment.”
When do I get paid?
Payment for all items must be received before they are shipped to potential buyers. However, all buyers are given 5 days from the time of receipt to evaluate the item. This five day period includes weekends and holidays. If the item has not return shipped in the 5 day period the item is considered sold. When the inspection period begins can vary depending on shipping mode and location address of the buyer. You will be contacted when the item sells and be given the option of receiving a check or of leaving the proceeds on account to be used as a credit towards future purchases.
How long does it take?
Selling on Consignment is determined by many factors, not the least of which is price. Trew Audio looks at original selling price, condition, market viability and seller urgency before suggesting a price to the seller. Although Trew Audio will offer suggestions, pricing is at the seller’s discretion.
Condition will be another determining factor. Obviously an item that has been protected from the elements and the daily banging from use will be more desirable. Cleaning items will improve marketability and creates a “cared for” image to the buyer.
Timing is everything. Your buyer will come along. All working items will sell if all of the above factors are considered and acted on in an objective way but patience may be necessary on certain items.
What are the hottest used items?
If you’re like most of us, you have some equipment that you rarely use. Or, you may just want to affordably replace what you have with something newer or different.
Either way, here is a list of our quickest selling and most requested used equipment. It’s equipment you can usually expect a quick turnaround on if listed on our Consignment Program. Keep in mind that condition, age and accessories included affect the price you can expect and how quickly they move:
- Sound Devices mixers and recorders
- Lectrosonics frequency agile wireless systems
- Zaxcom wireless systems
- Boom Poles
- Sennheiser shotgun microphones
- Lavalier microphones wired for Lectrosonics transmitters
- Smart slates
- Comtek systems
With our Wish List System we try to match used gear up with a buyer even before it’s listed on the web site.
How do I make payment?
Payment must be made with cash, check or credit card. Open accounts may never be used for consignment purchases. No consignment items will be shipped until payment is received.
What if I am not satisfied with my purchase?
The buyer has 5 days from time of receipt to notify Trew Audio is he wishes to return the item for any reason for a refund. After these five days the sale is final. Please note that the five day inspection period includes weekends and holidays. Returns must be made promptly and items must arrive in the same condition as when originally shipped. Buyer pays the return shipping. Original shipping is not refundable.
Is there any warranty?
There is no warranty on consignment items.
Do you have a consignment program in the US and Canada?
Yes! We have consignment items at all our locations. This is good news for all of our customers wherever they are. Our consignment program has always required that the items be at our store for photographing and evaluation. For our customers inside Canada, items can be shipped within Canada more conveniently than items shipped internationally. Customers in Canada are encouraged to come by and check out the items for themselves.
How can I tell where an item is located?
You can find the items location in the description area. Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver or Nashville. A phone number is provided for further assistance.
Can I buy consignment items from the US or Canada if I am in another country?
Absolutely. Consignment items at all our locations can be shipped anywhere in the world.
Are Trew Audio’s consignment policies the same for the US and Canada locations?
Yes. For specifics about our consignment program, and how to buy and sell through it, please see the above buyer and seller FAQs.
Can I contact the seller?
Buyers and sellers names are kept confidential, unless both express a desire to contact each other.
Does it matter which store I call?
For best service, it is recommended that you call the store where the item is located.
All Trew Audio Rental items listed in our used department come with a 30-day warranty. However, rental items may not be immediately available as they may be out in use. Our sales representatives can put the item on hold for you and will let you know when the item is available.
