Sound Devices 888 Portable Mixer-Recorder

The Sound Devices 888 packs eight mic preamps, 16 channels, and 20 tracks into a portable mixer-recorder compact and light enough for a bag, with the channel count and power a cart production needs.

It also carries Dante, sending and receiving 16 channels of audio over Ethernet, and shares its preamp design with the Sound Devices Scorpio.

Routing and Processing

Three FPGAs and a six-way ARM processor make the 888 fully routable: any physical input can go to any track, bus, or output. Each channel has a three-band EQ that sits pre- or post-fader, along with limiters, compressors, a high-pass filter, and delay. Dugan Automixing or MixAssist handles up to 16 channels, and the optional NoiseAssist and Cedar sdnx plugins suppress background noise on location. Dedicated com and slate controls handle talkback with the crew, and 10 buses send custom mixes to cameras and crew.

Recording

The 888 records to its internal 256 GB SSD and two SD cards at once. You can hand an SD card to production, record AAC files for transcription, and keep a backup on the SSD. It records 16-bit, 24-bit, or 32-bit float files at sample rates up to 192 kHz.

Power and Timecode

Two rear L-mount battery slots charge and power the unit, and its locking TA4 input takes 10 to 18 V from a smart battery, an NP-1 battery, or an in-line supply. The timecode generator has its own battery and holds timecode for up to four hours after power-off.

Control and Wireless

A CL-16 linear fader controller or another supported USB control surface adds faders and transport control on a cart. The SD-Remote app for Android and iPad shows transport controls, metering, and sound reports on a touch screen.

The SL-2 Dual SuperSlot Wireless Module mounts to the top panel with up to four channels of wireless audio in each slot. An Astral ARX16 docked with an A20-QuickDock adds 16 channels of wireless with no cables for power, audio, or GainForward control.
