Sound Devices Scorpio Portable Mixer-Recorder
The Sound Devices Scorpio is a portable mixer-recorder with 16 mic preamps, 32 channels, and 36 tracks that works over the shoulder or on a cart.
The Scorpio is the flagship of the venerable 8-Series, and it won both the Cinema Audio Society’s Outstanding Product in Production award and the AMPS Excellence in a Production Audio Project Technical Award.
Inputs, Outputs, and Routing
The Scorpio has 16 mic/line preamps, 32 channels of Dante in and out, AES in and out, 12 analog outputs, and several headphone outputs. A fully customizable routing matrix sends any input to any channel, bus, or output, and up to 12 buses can be mixed separately.
Processing
Three FPGAs and six ARM processors run its audio processing with 64-bit data paths. Its preamps include analog limiters, high-pass filters, delay, three-band EQ, and phantom power. Dugan Automixing or MixAssist handles up to 16 channels, two groups can be automixed at once, and the optional NoiseAssist and Cedar sdnx plugins suppress background noise on location.
Recording and Power
The Scorpio records to its internal 256 GB SSD and two SD cards at once, and can send different files to each medium. A built-in dual L-mount charger powers it from L-mount batteries, and two TA4 DC inputs take smart batteries, NP-1 batteries, or in-line supplies. The timecode generator holds timecode for up to four hours after power-off.
Control and Wireless
A CL-16 linear fader controller or another supported USB control surface adds faders on a cart, and the SD-Remote app for Android and iPad gives transport controls, metering, and sound reports. The SL-2 Dual SuperSlot Wireless Module mounts to the top panel, and an Astral ARX16 docked with an A20-QuickDock adds 16 channels of wireless with no cables.
