Sanken CSS-50 Three-Mode Stereo Shotgun Microphone
The Sanken CSS-50 is a three-mode stereo shotgun microphone for broadcasting and film. It switches between mono, normal stereo, and wide stereo in a 215 mm body.
Sanken’s capsules are thin and square, so three fit in a short acoustic tube, and the CSS-50 matches the basic shotgun performance of Sanken’s CSS-5 in a compact body. The capsules are electret condensers that match DC-biased capsules in frequency response, sensitivity, and noise.
Three Modes
Mono gives sharp shotgun directivity. Normal gives precise stereo localization, and wide expands the stereo image to 140° for cinematic ambience and sound effects.
The stereo modes use the X-Y method, which keeps localization precise and picks up less wind and vibration noise. The stereo pickup is most effective from 400 Hz to 3 kHz, the range that shapes stereo perception.
Connection and Power
Both channels leave through one XLR-5M connector, the left channel on pins 2 and 3 and the right on pins 4 and 5. The CSS-50 runs on 48 V phantom power and weighs 160 g.
