Lectrosonics L1 Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone

The Lectrosonics L1 is an omnidirectional lavalier microphone built around the Sonaura MEMS capsule, with 11 dB(A) self-noise and an 83 dB signal-to-noise ratio for clean dialog in the quietest scenes.

Where a traditional lavalier uses a FET-based condenser capsule, Sonaura uses a patented encapsulated silicon diaphragm made by semiconductor fabrication. Chip fabrication keeps every capsule alike. Each L1 is matched to within 0.5 dB in both sensitivity and frequency response, so every mic on a cast sounds the same and no one has to chase tonal differences between lavs in post. Its 11 dB(A) self-noise is lower than that of any other professional sub-miniature lavalier.

The L1 is made for the DSSM transmitter and plugs in through a 3-pin LEMO connector; no other LEMO-equipped transmitter works with this model. With the DSSM, the L1 switches between a high sensitivity mode and a low sensitivity mode that handles up to 134 dB SPL, set from the transmitter’s menu.

The Sonaura capsule resists moisture by its nature, and Lectrosonics adds a hydrophobic internal coating and caps with 0.4 mm laser-drilled ports that seal against water pressure. The mic keeps working even when accidentally submerged, and with the IP57-rated DSSM the whole system is watertight, from sweat under a costume to rain on location.

Two interchangeable caps tailor the high frequencies to the voice or the mounting position. The standard cap adds 3 dB from 8 to 20 kHz, and the high boost cap adds 9 dB from 12 to 14 kHz.

The capsule is 5.4 mm across and 22 mm long, so it fits standard lavalier mounting accessories, on a 1.8 m ultra-flexible, Kevlar-reinforced cable with a color ID ring at the connector. The Accessories Kit option includes a carry case, clip, pop filter, and ID rings. The Mic Only option includes the mic and its two caps.
