DPA 4017B Shotgun Microphone
The DPA 4017B is a short, lightweight shotgun microphone for booming in broadcast, ENG, and film, for camera systems and fixed positions at sports venues, and for studio recording.
At 68 g (2.4 oz) and 8.3 in (212 mm) long, it is among the shortest and lightest shotgun condenser mics. Its capsule pairs a supercardioid design with an interference tube for a highly directional pickup with excellent off-axis rejection, and DPA tuned the sound from the sides and back to stay natural, only damped. The 19 mm (0.75 in) cartridge handles 152 dB SPL peak before clipping, is immune to RF, and works in very humid, hot, or cold places.
Onboard Filters
Two rings switch the filters without tools. One adds a 4 dB high-frequency shelf at 8 kHz, which makes up for the high-frequency loss of a windjammer. The other adds a first-order roll-off below 120 Hz against handling and wind noise, on top of a permanent third-order high-pass filter at 50 Hz.
Modular Design
The 4017B is DPA’s MMC4017 capsule on the MMP-B preamp, part of their modular pencil mic series. The MMP-B also takes DPA’s other pencil capsules, among them the MMC4006 omni, the MMC4011 cardioid, the MMC4015 wide cardioid, and the MMC2006 and MMC2011 twin-diaphragm capsules. All DPA mics share the same sonic character, so the 4017B cuts easily with hidden DPA miniatures in post.
