Sanken CS-3e Mono Shotgun Microphone
The Sanken CS-3e, a mono shotgun microphone 27 cm long, keeps its super cardioid pickup down into the lowest frequencies.
Three directional capsules sit in a front-to-back array, combining line microphone pickup with a second-order pressure gradient. A conventional shotgun needs a length of over 1 m to stay directional in the low and middle frequencies. The CS-3e does it in a body that stays easy to handle in the field.
With its side and rear rejection, it picks out dialogue in difficult positions, such as close to a ceiling or near a noisy camera, and keeps reverberant room sound down. Proximity effect is low, so the sound changes little between a close-up and a wide shot.
The CS-3e is a DC biased condenser with 15 dB-A self-noise, powered by 48 V phantom through an XLR-3M connector. Its matte black body is 19 mm in diameter and weighs 120 g.
