Cinela COSI Windshield

Built for short microphones, the Cinela COSI windshield joins the suspension and the wind protection in one compact cage.

Cinela launched the COSI in 2018 on a principle they patented in 2017. Two isolators set wide apart on the outside of the cage hold the microphone firmly and keep handling noise well down. The cage surrounds the microphone completely, for good wind protection in a small volume. The microphone sits in a holder that locks into the back of the cage with a quarter turn. The COSI is less windproof than a larger windshield and more windproof than any other windshield of its size.

Cage Sizes and Holders

Five cage lengths, from the 13 cm XS to the 24 cm XL, take microphones from 75 mm up to 180 mm long, and the Specifications tab lists each size. Each model comes with the holder for its microphone’s diameter. Holders and cables come out and swap, so an L cage can take another microphone with the matching holder.

Fur and Wiring

The cage is lined with a medium fur, about 30 mm deep, that stays in place. The standard cables are blue, 4 mm thick, and built around a Kevlar core for flexibility and strength, in a short and a long length. Cinela can fit the cable with their RF option, a filter that gives more protection against interference from digital transmitters. For a Schoeps CCM on a digital transmitter, fit the RF option.

The SW-UL-C swivel base turns, or pulls out, to place the XLR or a plug-on transmitter, and the CAM-ADAPT accessory swaps in for the swivel to mount the COSI on a camera.

Good to Know

The DPA 4017B and 2017 fit the L cage with the XLR out the back, held in place by friction. The 2017 fits the XL-19 exactly. The XL cage for the MKH 8018 adds a pivot for a second axis, useful for MS or XY. The MKH 8018 is set in place by hand, with its first slits at the front edge of the holder. The cables are not AES/EBU specific, which is fine for short digital runs with a CMD 42. The microphone is not included.
