Sennheiser MKH 416-P48U3 Short Shotgun Mic

For film, radio, and television dialogue, especially outdoors, the Sennheiser MKH 416-P48U3 has been a standard short shotgun for decades.

It is a compact pressure-gradient mic with a short interference tube. Its RF condenser design makes it highly immune to humidity, so it keeps working in damp and cold conditions. The pattern is supercardioid at low and middle frequencies and narrows toward lobar above about 2 kHz.

That directivity, low self-noise, clear consonants, and good feedback rejection make it an all-around choice on a boom or a camera. It runs on 48 V phantom power.
