Remote Audio Universal Headsets

The Remote Audio Universal Headsets handle slating and communication through a condenser mic that works on both phantom-powered and bias-powered inputs.

Some slate and com inputs supply phantom power and others bias power, which used to mean a different headset for each. A small switch on these headsets selects either 12 to 48 V phantom power, which most inputs use, or 5 V bias power. Bias power suits the slate and com inputs on Zaxcom recorders, the Aaton Cantar X3, smartphones, and wireless mic transmitters.

Each headset’s cable ends in a TA5F connector that carries both the headphone feed and the mic. Sound Devices adopted the Remote Audio TA5 headset standard for the Scorpio, so the headsets plug straight into its headset connector (switch set to phantom) for stereo monitoring and slating. Every model except the MDR-7506 with the in-cable mic has a coiled cable, 1.75 ft collapsed and 8 ft extended. That model has a 6 ft straight cable.

Two Mic Styles

The miniature gooseneck mic is on a low-profile boom that bends to put the mic where it is needed and tucks out of the way for storage. The in-cable mic sits in the cable just below the chin, for anyone who wants a headset for slating and communication with the feel of a standard pair of headphones.

Adapter Cables

Breakout and adapter cables connect the TA5F plug to other gear. Each breakout splits the TA5F into a 3.5 mm TRS unimatch plug and one more connector. The choices are a TA3F for a Sound Devices 664 or Zaxcom Nomad, an XLR3M for a mixer, or a TA5F for a Lectrosonics transmitter. A TRRS adapter suits the Cantar X3, and a 6 in adapter runs from TA5M to a male Binder connector. Each adapter cable is sold separately.
