Cinela PIANO MS and Double MS Windshields
Built for MS and double MS recording with half-shotgun microphones, the Cinela PIANO PIA-2 and PIA-3 windshields hold a stereo set inside one suspended cage.
The PIA-2 is the MS version of the PIANO PIA-1, made above all for a Schoeps CMIT 5U with a CCM 8. With the right suspension and wiring it takes other pairs, such as a Neumann KMR 81 or an Ambient ATE208 Emesser. The PIA-3 is the double MS version, made for a CMIT 5U with a CCM 8 and a CCM 4, with a reinforced suspension to carry all three. Dedicated versions are set up for the Neumann RSM 191, the Audio-Technica BP4029, a Sennheiser MKH 30 with an MKH 40 or MKH 60, a CMIT 5U with a CMC 6, and the KONOS microphone.
Swivel
Each windshield comes with a single-axis swivel (S) or a two-axis swivel (D). The two-axis swivel keeps the left and right of the stereo image level while the boom tilts to the side.
Wiring
An MS PIANO has a 5-pin male XLR output and a double MS PIANO a 7-pin male XLR. The side and rear microphones plug into Binder sockets on the inner cross with detachable cords, while the mid microphone is wired to a small board that joins all three to the output cable. The RSM 191 version runs a thin, flexible cable from the microphone’s 7-pin DIN plug to a 7-pin male XLR, so only an XLR7 extension is needed to reach its power supply. The BP4029 version has a 5-pin male XLR output.
Fur and Options
The 3D primary fabric serves alone in light wind or indoors, and a fur goes over it in short or long pile, in black, gray, or black and gray. The PIA-SHELL carries the windshield with its fabric fitted, and the PIA-KELLY rain cover fits over the fabric for wet days.
Good to Know
For mono use of an MS or double MS PIANO, a splitter gives channel 1 (M). The extension cable and the splitter are not included. On a PIA-3 used in mono or MS, Cinela advises the standard, more flexible CMIT suspension module for the least handling noise. The Compatibility tab lists the microphones these windshields are set up for.
