Cinela PIANISSIMO MS Windshield

The Cinela PIANISSIMO MS holds a stereo pair of short microphones in a windshield with a suspended cage, each version fitted with a suspension module and wiring made for its pair.

Cinela released the PIANISSIMO in 2014 as the smaller sister of their PIANO, for microphones shorter than 21 cm. Its egg-shaped cage is slightly elliptical in cross-section, a shape that behaves well acoustically and keeps wind noise down when the boom swings sideways.

MS and XY Versions

In MS stereo the PIANISSIMO takes a wide range of microphone pairs, and its modules swap more easily than in the PIANO. Cinela prefers suspension modules with crossed isolators for MS pairs, since they handle vibration better. The microphones plug into an internal Binder holder with detachable cables, and the windshield’s 5-pin male XLR output carries Mid and Side. Cinela also makes XY versions for two Sennheiser MKH 8040 microphones and for the Milab XY-82, and versions for the Tetramic and the SPS200.

Dedicated and Versatile Versions

For a Sennheiser MKH 30 with an MKH 40 or 50, the Dedicated version holds the pair low on crossed isolators, with the suspension fixed in place, for better wind protection and lower handling noise. The Versatile version keeps the standard PIANISSIMO’s quick module and cable changes. It sets the microphones slightly higher on elliptical isolators, which isolate the figure-8 MKH 30 less well.

For the Sennheiser MKH 8018, the Dedicated version wires the microphone straight to the 5-pin output with no Binder holder. The Versatile version adds a double Binder holder and a detachable module for other microphones and cables.

Sennheiser MKH 8030 Versions

The versions for an MKH 8030 have a suspension redesigned for the 8030’s high sensitivity to very low frequencies. Cinela strongly recommends MZF II filters (70 Hz, 18 dB per octave) on the 8030. You can add a gentler, higher filter as well, depending on how much handling noise protection you want. The 8060 in the 8030 + 8060 version connects with its regular XLR.

Fur, Swivel, and Shell

A 3D primary fabric covers the cage, and a synthetic fur goes over it for stronger wind, in short or long pile and in black, gray, or black and gray. The windshield mounts on the pole with the two-axis SW-2AX swivel, and the PIANI-SHELL, a polycarbonate case, holds it with its fabric fitted.

Good to Know

The PIANI-CAB-1 and PIANI-CAB-3 kits change the output to a 3-pin or 7-pin XLR. An extension cable and splitter are sold separately. The microphones are not included.
