The Loon Boom was developed on the basis of creating the 'next generation' of booms. With previous experience in award winning boom design, along with three years of research and testing of materials, analyzing problems with current booms and listening to professional beta testing feedback; the Loon was born.

The following is a list of features included in Loons boompoles. All have been innovatively designed to bring new approaches to a standard tool of the industry.

Graphite (Carbon Fiber)

The tubes we developed for the Loon are far beyond any graphite currently being used. They are more rigid, durable, and have unprecedented strength to weight ratio. A boom operator will feel this balance when the boom is fully extended. We conducted a test on a 14 ft. boom with a 35 lb. load. This is obviously more weight than any person will ever consider adding to the tip of the boom, however it handled the weight beautifully and demonstrates the durability of our graphite. The fact that we offer a 21, 24, and 27 ft. boom that an operator can effectively handle is a true testament to the quality and balance of our graphite tubes.

Locking Collars

The collars used on our booms are made from the highest grade aluminum alloy, (7075-T6). They will provide years of reliability with no concern of wear or over tightening the joints. The collars also have an O-Ring seal within to help prevent grime from getting into the threads. These collars also have a second function. They have been designed to activate our dual locking system.

Dual Locking System

No other boom has this function. This allows an operator to fully extend the boom and maintain firm and quiet joints. Boom operators have complained over the years that they could not fully extend other booms because of the wiggle in the joints. This system cures that major problem. The boompole can be fully disassembled for cleaning.

TogLoc Technology

TogLoc technology ensures a secure connection at the tip and base of the boom. It also allows for easy cable interchangeability. You simply loosen the collar at either end of the boom three full turns to remove the BaseMate or TogLoc microphone connector. Notice both of these parts have a tapered angle where they mount internally in the boom. This tapered angle prevents the parts from being pulled out of the boom and provides for a secure / quiet connection.

BaseMate

The BaseMate acts as a bumper to the base of the Boom and is easily removed with three full turns of the collar. It also has a built in flow through for straight cable which is normally an extra feature required to be added to the boom. The BaseMate is what connects the Wing and allows for an easy conversion in the field from coiled cable to straight. The BaseMate is included with each purchase.

Wing

The Wing is a very functional device for coiled cord users. The Wing is easily secured to the BaseMate by the tightening of two set screws. The Wing allows for an easy XLR and Wireless transmitter connection to the boom while not being concerned about damaging the units while resting the boom on its base. You can even rotate the pins every 90 degrees for desired orientation of your wireless.

1018 Cables

We tried to find a cable to compliment our boom but could not. This is why we developed our 1018 cable from scratch. We have heard complaints about other coiled cables causing the boom to snap back like an over stretched spring. We have solved that problem by developing a cable that has a 6:1 ratio of extended to collapsed length. ( most commercially available retractile cables offer 4:1 or 5:1 at best and have high tension when extended) Our coils are able to naturally retract and recoil because of the proprietary manufacturing techniques used during the coiling process. These techniques also help deaden the internal noise that coil cables can generate inside the boom. The Loon 1018 cables offer superior shielding and performance.
