Zaxcom Digital Wireless
Zaxcom’s digital wireless is now ready for the masses. It is “plug-and-play”, has plenty of range at a solid 1500’, and delivers perfect 24 bit quality sound with absolutely no compander distortion or “pumping” artifacts. Use it as a wireless boom, and it sounds exactly like the wired boom. Simply put, the sound quality is indistinguishable from a hard wire.
The receiver has the features expected in professional wireless, such as a home screen that continually displays frequency, RF levels of A&B antennas, receiver power level and transmitter battery condition. Easily change the channels, high-pass filters and more with three “soft keys” on the front panel. For people using a mixer or recorder with digital inputs, distortion can be reduced even further by using the receiver’s AES output.
In addition to the truly remarkable sound quality, the Zaxcom has other features that are unique. The most notable of these is the remote control abilities for the transmitter. Once the free Zaxcom software is install into a palm-type computer such as the Compaq iPac (or other similar device using the CE operating system) just press the correct button and hold the speaker near the microphone to change the settings on the transmitter. For instance, the channel and sensitivity can be changed without having to go into the actor’s clothing.
Using this system, the iPac doesn’t even have to be near the transmitter. We have shown that the tones coming from the iPac can be relayed via walkie-talkie, cell phone, or even Comtek receiver. This means that the recordist can actually change the settings of the transmitter, even if they are on the set and the actor is in their trailer, with a phone call! We have even changed the settings of a transmitter in Nashville with a phone call from New Jersey!
The transmitter is available in a miniature bodypack (using two AA cells) and a “plug-on” style. The plug-on transmitter has internal 48V phantom power.
Zaxcom wireless are finding their way into more and more well known productions, proving the worth of its cutting edge features. For a personal account of its use as a wireless boom, check out "Memoirs of a Sound Mixer: Jersey Girl".
