DPAs very new approach to a problem old as the wind:
The WindPac

Windscreen and Suspension System

This new windscreen from DPA not only looks very different, it is very different! It is very lightweight, sonically very transparent, very simple, and after the wrap, becomes very compact.

Starting with the "zeppelin" outer cover youll notice that the material is thin. Very thin. This is why the WindPac is so sonically transparent.

Where is the furry cover? There is no furry cover! Then how effective is it in the wind? It is very effective, and can be used for dialog in winds up to 70 mph!

The microphone suspension is also very different! It is probably the most universal, most lightweight, most versatile, and strongest mount ever made for boom pole use. And, (the most important part) it isolates very well! The one-piece frame is made of a synthetic composite that is so lightweight it defies logic when you lift it. The center portion is suspended with bands at eight points with a variety of placement options that allow quick adjustment for microphones of different lengths and weight. Traditional plastic clips are not used with the WindPac mount, so this one suspension is all you need for every microphone of every length commonly used on the end of a boom pole. Suddenly the price is getting attractive.

Yet another new twist: The WindPac mount has an additional swivel point that, in addition to traditional up-down adjustment, also allows the mount to pivot left-right. This can be very useful in "plant" situations or when suspending the boom from a stand.

But will the Boom Operator like it? Yes! Amazingly, all of these unique features combine to create the lightest weight, by far, of any other full coverage system available. The complete medium size system weighs just 270 g (9 oz). Its light weight is the first thing youll noticed when holding the WindPac. And, as all boom operators will attest, any noticeable reduction in weight is very noticeable at the end of an 18 foot pole!

One of the most versatile features of the WindPac system is its ability to accept two microphones for stereo recording, without the need for a special sized stereo accessories! Suddenly the price is becoming economical!

Another cool feature of the WindPac is its integral cable control method. A tiny, sonically dead XLR jumper cable using a very short custom right angle female connector has a small cylinder attached about midway, and is included with every WindPac. This cylinder locks silently into a receptacle built into the mount, providing a sturdy, noise-free strain relief. For stereo use, this cable is also available in a 5-pin to 3-pin Y configuration.

Finally, theres a big surprise:
After wrap is called, it folds up small enough to fit in your pocket!
Sounds impossible, but its true. Give it a twist and the spring steel frame collapses into a disk about 5 inches round, and 1 inch thick. The entire rig can be stored in its included belt pack.

Very cool.
