Battery Powered Speaker

Trew Audio now has in their rental department custom designed battery powered speakers that are unlike any others.  The purpose of the speakers is to allow extremely portable, loud playback, typically for music videos.

The speakers are 20"x10"x12" and consist of a 12" speaker and horn, a surprisingly clean and noise free internal 180 Watt amplifier that runs on an NP-1 battery.

Extreme Portability --- With Volume!

There is no external amp, no AC cables --- just a speaker cabinet and an NP-1, readily available on any shoot.

The speakers were first used on a Rodney Crowell video produced by High Five Productions, which was a whirlwind cross country shoot done in remote locations where power was not available.

Loud synchronous playback can be accomplished in the simplest possible form with the powered speaker, a DAT machine and an audio cable. A timecode slate can be used even with a non-timecode DAT machine by putting timecode on audio channel 2 of the playback track. Using the headphone output of the DAT machine, the volume can be controlled without the addition of a mixer.

With the addition of a wireless transmitter/receiver set, the speaker can even be completely detached, which has been useful in car shots.

Two or more of these speakers can be used at once to provide enough coverage for a large "electric" band setup, including even the deaf drummer. When battery power is not needed, the same speakers can be used in the conventional manner with an external power amplifier. You can also plug into the speaker with a 4-pin DC supply cable from an external DC source.
